Usher Kids

Deafness Foundation 2020 grant recipients Usher Kids provided a valuable update of their project Usher Kids Australia Educational Video Series.

We started filming our first of two educational videos on Friday 19th June at the Melbourne Children’s Eye Clinic located at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Our first video will showcase the various eye appointments a child with Usher syndrome usually has at their annual eye exam.

We anticipate the video will relieve some of the anxieties experienced by families and children leading up to the tests.

The video will show families what to expect on the day, what tests are involved, what each test is looking for, and some strategies to make the experience more enjoyable for everyone involved.

We interviewed two specialists on on the day, Dr Jon Ruddle, Paediatric Ophthalmologist and Sandra Staffieri, Paediatric Orthoptist.

They were both so generous with their time and information, we will use the additional audio as a podcast in the months ahead.

Our overall aims of the educational videos are:

  • To educate parents and carers of children with hearing loss due to Usher syndrome on the specific aspects and challenges of the condition invarious settings

  • To improve the confidence of parents and carers of children with hearing loss due to Usher syndrome to advocate on behalf of their children on the specific aspects and challenges of the condition in various settings

  • To raise awareness of the challenges that Usher families encounter and make changes that will reduce the mental health and well-being disparities in the usher community

  • To empower children with Usher syndrome, their families and those that support them
